CAIT AROUND THE WORLD

May 19, 2023 — On my first full day in Greece I got up much earlier than I’d been in a while. (Except for my day in Singapore, of course.) I went down for the free breakfast provided by the hostel, which had tons of options — cereals, toast, spreads, meats and cheeses. While sitting there, I Googled “Athens free walking tours” and a website came right up! I filled out the booking page and they emailed me back to say that they did have availability for the tour that morning.

I headed upstairs to grab a few things, then walked to the meeting point, which was actually a cafe just around the corner from my hostel! I got a coffee and met the tour guide shortly after. He was an Australian expat with Greek ancestry and did a fantastic job guiding us around the city, pointing out important sites both modern and ancient, and even took us for the changing of the guard at the President’s house and delivering a brief history of the country along the way.

After our walking tour, I headed back to the hostel to do some laundry and vegetate a little bit while also working on Instagram and the blog a little.

I went out to dinner that night at GrillHouse — this place was recommended on the tour — for their moussaka (another recommendation from the tour). I also ordered dolmades which is minced meat and rice wrapped in grape leaves. One of my favourite Greek appetizers. Everything there was absolutely delicious and thoroughly enjoyable. I was very full (and a bit gassy!) as I headed back to the hostel but I’ll blame that on my eyes being bigger than my belly! I highly recommend the moussaka and dolmades if you ever get to GrillHouse in Athens — but bring a friend if you can because you could totally split it!

I showered and headed to bed shortly after returning, one successful day in Athens down!
