Day 108: Ubud, Indonesia

May 14, 2023 — My last day in Ubud and basically my last (real) day in Indonesia. What a ride it has been! I had one more thing on my list to see in Ubud, but this morning I was being lazy. I woke up, had breakfast, and did some stuff on my iPad. I scrolled through Instagram and then texted with my mom a little bit, who encouraged me to go see that last thing on my list and make the most of the day.

About fifteen minutes later, I was up, out the door, and on my way to the rice terraces on the back of a Grab motorbike (this is the equivalent of Uber in Southeast Asia and is a very common — and cheap — method of transportation). I ended up at the Uma Ceking rice terraces and decided to pay just the basic entrance fee.

They were absolutely beautiful. I had a wonderful afternoon; I’m so glad I went. I had lunch when I arrived, overlooking the terraces themselves, and then walked around the terraces.

When I finished, I got another Grab bike to get back to Ubud proper, putting me back at the hostel around three in the afternoon. I relaxed until dinner and then went out a little after seven that night. I enjoyed my last dinner in Ubud at the same place I’d gone after the hike up Mount Batur since they had a chicken dish on the menu that had sounded very appealing.

After dinner, and after watching the traffic on the street for a while, I headed back to the hostel to shower and get some sleep.

It was a very melancholy night for me. It made me sadder than I thought it would to be leaving Indonesia. I’d been pleasantly surprised by my time there, and I’d also had some really tough moments to overcome while I was there. Until I get to go back, Indonesia holds a special place in my heart.
