May 11, 2023 — Today was the earliest I’d been up in a while. I popped out of bed at 8:30am to have breakfast, organize my stuff, pack my bag, and be ready to go for the shuttle bus at 11:00am that was going to be taking me from the hostel to the port, where I would then catch the fast boat to the port of Sanur and be picked up again for a shuttle to Ubud. (I arranged all this through my hostel — highly recommend.)

This was definitely one of the shorter travel days I had in Indonesia — I was picked up on time and transferred to the port on Nusa Lembongan which actually turned out to be Mushroom Beach, where I’d been the day before. The longest wait of the day was here, waiting to be able to get on the boat and actually go to Sanur. The actually journey on board was really quick — only about a half an hour. The drive into Ubud took longer because of all the traffic — it was about an hour before we arrived at my hostel.

Once there, though, I checked in and was able to get into the dorm right away. I got my things situated and then went out for a little walk and to find a spot to have some lunch. I found a place that sounded appealing (although for what you got, it was overpriced and not the best).
After lunch, I headed back to the hostel. It was around three thirty in the afternoon at that point. I did some thinking about what I wanted to do over the next three days. I think if I gave anyone advice about how to backpack through Indonesia, it would be to budget an extra day than you think you’ll need in any given place, because there are numerous things that you can do and you can book them all at a moment’s notice. One thing I knew I wanted to do was the Mount Batur sunrise hike. A girl I met on my K’Gari (Fraser Island) tour recommended this to me and my hostel here in Ubud offered booking with transfer from the hostel, breakfast, the hike, a tour of a coffee plantation, and transfer back to the hostel in their tour. I booked in to do that on the 13th of May in the wee hours of the morning.
After booking that, I showered and curled up in the room with the curtains drawn around me and the air conditioning whirring and I did a little bit of nothing.
Later, I went out for dinner at a place just down a side street from where I was staying and enjoyed some loaded nachos and chicken satay. Huge portions — I could barely eat it all!
After dinner, I walked back to the hostel and went to sleep.
