Day 102: Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia

May 8, 2023 — I finally woke up around ten in the morning. It was tough to get up, even though I didn’t have that late of a night. I did get woken up around midnight, though, and I was also just tired.

I finally got out of bed around ten thirty and went to have some toast with butter and pineapple jam (which is really good!) and coffee, included at the hostel as part of free breakfast. I actually enjoyed two coffees that morning, which is the first time I’d done that in a while!

I wasn’t sure what I’d do that day but I decided to inquire at the hostel about renting a scooter. Renting a scooter is something that I really wanted to do while in Indonesia since it’s an extremely popular way of getting around and — as far as I know — there really aren’t any regulations on who is allowed to drive scooters. I will say that they don’t have that much power behind them, unlike, say, a motorcycle, but they’re still plenty peppy! (And intimidating, if you’ve never driven one before!)

The hostel had just one left, so I was feeling pretty damn lucky. The guy handed me the key and showed me a couple of things, but I still had no idea how to work the thing. I asked him if he could show me what to do, told him I’d never driven one before. He was really nice about it and showed me how to start it, stop it, explained the brakes and the gas and so on. Thankfully it was an automatic!

Funny story: A couple came back to their bike and the woman was trying to learn how to drive it around and accidentally drove right into the bike that you can see parked next to me. No injuries, it was far enough away, but after they got it propped back up and moved further away, I was getting a selfie of me on my bike and the man offered to take the picture. So now you get a full view of me on my scooter!

I went for a ride around the islands, covering spots on Nusa Lembongan and on Nusa Cenida, just over the yellow bridge. In Nusa Lembongan, I saw Dream Beach, Devil’s Tears, Sunset Point, and Secret Lagoon (and some of these were really hard to get to!).

Dream Beach
Devil’s Tears — the waves crash into a cavern and come back out in this mist that looks like steam, or tears I suppose. Personally, I think this spot ought to be called Devil’s Breath, but hey. Heads up to those visiting, there’s a small entrance fee to visit here but it’s valid for the whole day and this is a nice spot to come back and watch sunset from!
Sunset Point
Secret Lagoon

After crossing Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan, I saw the Blue Lagoon and stayed there. It’s one of the most epic things I’ve ever seen. I was able to eat at the Klyf Beach Club and enjoyed some hummus with warm pita (so good) and a virgin sangria (it was just the thing that sounded best, but I thought to myself afterward that it was a good thing I’d gone for it, especially since I was driving, and on unfamiliar roads and in a new vehicle at that).

Blue Lagoon — the pictures really don’t do it justice. This is one of the most beautiful vistas I’ve ever seen!
My lunch view ❤️

There was a spot over the ocean where you could zip line in the lagoon. I thought about going…but decided not to, ultimately.

I rode back to the hostel after that and chilled right out for a bit. I sat by the pool and read the rest of my book.

I got changed again and went out for sunset and dinner. The sunset, unfortunately, was disappointing, but I’m glad I tried to make it. It’s just those darn clouds that get in the way. Dinner was good and I had an incredible view over Dream Beach.

Meh sunset — blasted clouds…
But a beautiful dinner! Virgin pina colada and nasi goreng special (with two chicken satay sticks).

After dinner, I rode back to the hostel in the dark (!!), handed in the keys to the scooter, showered, watched some YouTube videos and did some other random things, then went to bed.
