Day 77: Cairns, Australia

April 13, 2023 — I had a bit more of a slow morning. I had breakfast after a quick grocery shop and spent most of the morning working on planning the rest of my trip and doing other administrative things.

In the afternoon, I headed to the Cairns Art Gallery since I saw the day before that they were currently running an Andy Warhol exhibit and that sounded interesting. I’d never actually seen his artwork and know him more from Men In Black III than from anything else. The gallery and its exhibits are actually housed in an old converted building and it’s really neat to just walk through.

This was a really interesting sculpture by Patricia Paccinini, who is known for her hyper-realistic works meant to both amaze and confound. When I first saw this I thought the girl being held was a real person!

I had dinner down at the bar with my ticket that I got on arrival which included a beer. I went for a schooner of Great Northern which is very much a quintessential brand in Queensland and which is actually very good — full flavoured and refreshing. After dinner, I got a cider with my other voucher for a free drink.

Chicken schnitty, fries, salad, and a schooner!

The bar had hockey and baseball playing on the screens overhead and I watched them while I ate and drank, feeling nostalgic for home.

I went back to my room later, eventually showered, and crawled into bed.
