Day 76: Cairns, Australia

April 12, 2023 — My first full day in Cairns! I always love moving to a new place because it’s full of potential. Anything can happen, and you’re about to find out what will.

I got up, dressed, and ate the rest of my Froot Loops, which I was very sad about but it was also a good thing because it freed up space in my food bag. I went out to the grocery store — thankfully Woolworths was only a couple blocks away — and bought a few things.

Frooty Loops of deliciousness ☺️

After dropping that stuff back off at the hostel, I got a coffee and walked around. From the hostel, I headed for the swimming lagoon, and then walked and up and the Esplanade and the Boardwalk. I walked past the Prawn Star restaurant, where I planned to eat dinner after reading about it online. I saw boato in the water at the marina and part of it is public access for all the tours to the Great Barrier Reef that run from it, so I got to walk along and see the Pro Dive boats, one of which I would be on in about a week and a half.

Annee’s Cafe Sua Da vanilla concoction! So good!

Major low tide at the boardwalk!

Turtles!

I walked back around to the hostel and then down to a sports store to see if I could find a microfibre towel since I’d left mine on Fraser Island by accident and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take the replacement with me. I’d tried Kathmandu earlier that morning but I wasn’t thrilled by the options. Unfortunately, the other spot I tried didn’t really have any better choices. I left it for the time being and stopped for a smoothie on the walk back to the hostel.

This smoothie was delicious.

When I returned to Gilligan’s, I got my swimsuit on and took my laptop downstairs to the bar area. I bought a Kryptonite (pineapple Smirnoff and regular Smirnoff Ice) and talked to my friend Josephine back home for about an hour over FaceTime. I did a little laptop work but not much because my battery was dying.

I went back upstairs later, had dinner, texted goodnight to everyone at home, and went to bed.
