April 1, 2023 — A new month, a new adventure! I woke up at 8:00am feeling quite a bit better compared to the day before. I got out of bed at 8:30 and started gathering my stuff because I needed to check out that morning. I ate breakfast, took a shower, and organized everything before heading down to reception. I found out that I could leave my bags at the hostel in storage while I was on my tour of the Whitsundays for the same price as I would have paid if I’d stored my bags at the tour company’s office. To me, it was a no-brainer to leave them at the hostel because then I wouldn’t have to cart my stuff to the office that morning and I wouldn’t have to cart it all back to the hostel after I got off the boat two nights later.
I called mom and dad from the kitchen and we chatted for over an hour on FaceTime. It’s a running joke that I FaceTime when I’m really missing home, but it’s also so true. On the night bus from Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach, I’d been missing home something fierce. After I was done chatting with mom, I talked to dad for a while longer and took a walk around town with him (I love having data).
Later, I walked down to the marina and the meeting point for the ship I would be on to get to the Whitsundays. We had to be there at 1:45pm and we got on the boat at shortly after 2:00pm. I sailed with True Blue Sailing on the New Horizon, a wooden sailing vessel. We got our room assignments and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening out on the bow, mingling and mixing. I got talking to a couple of friends who were visiting from Brisbane for the weekend. They were super nice and I hung out with them for the evening.

We were supposed to swim that afternoon, but as the wind allowed us to put the sails up, we actually skipped that and instead enjoyed some time under sail. We anchored for the night in Chance Bay. The sunset that evening was gorgeous, and when night fell we could see thunderstorms crackling in the sky out across the sea. It’s quite a sight to see lightning in the sky while you’re on the water, but know that it’s still so far away.

It wasn’t an overly late night; I headed to bed around ten or so. I think I was still pretty tuckered from the night bus.
