Day 33: Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

February 28, 2023 — I finished off February with a bit of a lazy day. I woke up at a decent hour but laid in bed and read until after ten a.m. When I’d finished my book, I rolled out of bed and got dressed, then walked out the door for a small walk and wander.

I called Mom while I was on my walk and heard stories from home while I checked out some of the shops at the mall. I’d lost my leggings somewhere between Hobart and Strahan — I’m pretty sure that I accidentally left them at Narrara before I left on my tour when I was quickly repacking my bag in the common room because I didn’t want to wake my roommates at a quarter to seven in the morning. I had some luck but didn’t buy anything.

Instead, I made my way back to Narrara Backpackers and had a delicious lunch of Brie and crackers (one of my staples lately) while chatting with Dad. I worked for a little while on my finances and the blog, then gave in and headed back up to my room to watch a movie. I finished Madagascar 2, which I’d had on to sleep to for the past couple of nights, and then finally watched Madagascar 3.

After dinner that night, I wandered outside the hostel again and walked down to the waterfront, searching out the promise of Van Diemen’s Land ice cream. When we were on the tour, after hiking up to Marion’s Lookout and then back down to Ronny’s Creek, our guide enticed us with the promise of ice cream. One of the other girls on tour and I were absolutely rejuvenated by said promise and had a near-religious experience when we finally stopped later that day. In honour of my last night in Tasmania and my tour, I ordered myself a cookies-and-cream and mango cone and ate it happily while I enjoyed watching the boats float in the harbour and seeing the sun go down on another day in Tassie.

So many traditional wood sailing vessels in the harbour!
Mango and cookies and cream. Yum!
The city with Mt Wellington/kunanyi rising in the distance.

Back at the hostel, I showered and slept, mentally preparing to leave and get on a plane back to the mainland the next day.
