Day 19: Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

Enjoy a photo from the previous day when the storm was rolling in.

February 14, 2023 — Happy Valentine’s Day, it’s raining!

Bondi Beach had a day of really steady rain which started around mid-morning. The morning yoga on the roof (which I didn’t manage to wake up for) at 8:00am got rained out and they wound up inside, as I heard from some of my roommates who had gone.

I got breakfast and managed to get my laundry done, did some work on the blog, and was going to spend most of the day reading and doing absolutely nothing, and while some of that happened, I also had an absolutely wonderful time hanging out with my roommates.

I was in a mixed 8–bed dorm, but it wound up that there was only one guy in the room with seven girls. We hung out for most of the day and played Speed, which is a card game played by two people trying to get rid of the cards in their hand before the other person does. It’s super speedy (hence the name) and a lot of fun. We played a bunch of hands of that and chatted for most of the day as we shared a box of wine that some of them had bought. It turned out to be a really nice rainy day spent with some really awesome people.

I had planned to go down to the restaurant next door for taco night but ultimately decided against it and just made food at the hostel at 9:30 at night — back to university meal times, which cracks me up. Turns out the tacos were soft-shell too, so I wasn’t too heartbroken. I ate in the room since the kitchen closes at 10:00pm (so weird) and we talked some more until eventually we all turned in for the night. I chatted with mom and dad before I went to bed, hoping for a sunnier day in the morning as we all hoped to go on the Bondi to Coogee beach walk.

I’d been feeling a little bit down over the last few days and this day turned out to be exactly what I needed. A day to be lazy and some good times with new friends. I’m so grateful for that.
