Our last day in New York City came with rain.
We got a slow start to the morning, sleeping in a bit before making a quick trek to Starbucks. With coffee in hand, we returned to the hostel and took our time packing up our stuff. (This trip was done with my 40L Osprey Fairview and wow, do I have some thoughts to share in another post!) We checked out and hopped the subway to Broadway for brunch at Ellen’s Stardust Diner.
We’d had some other ideas in mind for brunch but Ellen’s was just so much fun for dinner and it sounded like a great idea for brunch. Once again, it certainly didn’t disappoint. And let me tell you, their tater tots are incredible. Absolutely the closest you can get to McDonald’s hashbrowns outside of McDonald’s, just in tater tot style. While we were enjoying the music inside, it started absolutely pouring rain outside! We sat for a little while hoping that it would stop in a few minutes, but it didn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon, so we braved the rain and raced across Broadway to the subway, where we headed back downtown toward Penn Station.
We were hoping to make our way to Newark early and change our flight (we were supposed to depart at 5:15pm) to an earlier one so that we would be hope earlier, given that the weather wasn’t going to allow us to do much more exploring in the city.
It was very lucky that we made it to the airport and changed our flights!
We were supposed to leave on a 3pm flight after making the change, which ended up being delayed until 4pm. When we finally made it to Toronto, we had actually missed our connecting flight to Ottawa because of the delay in Newark. Thankfully, the airline was able to rebook us on a flight leaving at 8:15pm (which was actually our connecting flight to Ottawa that we had originally booked), finally touching down at 9:30 that night in Ottawa. After ten hours of travel, we were really happy to be back!
But alas, that meant the end of our New York adventure.
I loved New York. The pace, the possibility, the endless avenues for exploration. I am so excited for future trips to explore more of the city and take in even more of all that it has to offer. Some top destinations that we unfortunately didn’t make it to this time (but which weren’t on my must-do’s, so that’s okay!): the High Line, Yankee Stadium (and watching a game), Coney Island, and the Holland Tunnel.
Don’t forget to check out the NYC Photo Gallery for tons of pictures from this amazing trip!
